What Is DVD?

DVD, or Digital Versatile Disc, is the next generation of optical disc storage technology.
It's essentially a bigger, faster CD that can hold video as well as audio and computer data.  At present, DVD is mainly used for video.  Each DVD-Video disc can hold up hours of high quality movie footage, all in superb quality surround sound.  Because it's digital, DVD-Video never degenerates with age or can be snapped - unlike tape.

DVD-Videos can contain any of the following features...

  • Over 2 hours of high-quality digital video (over 8 hours on a double-sided, dual-layer disc).
  • Support for widescreen movies on standard or widescreen TVs (4:3 and 16:9 aspect ratios).
  • Up to 8 tracks of digital audio (for multiple languages, soundtracks, etc.).
  • Up to 32 subtitle/karaoke tracks.
  • Automatic "seamless" branching of video (for multiple story lines or ratings on one disc).
  • Up to 9 camera angles (different viewpoints can be selected during playback).
  • Menus and simple interactive features (for games, quizzes, etc.).
  • Multilingual identifying text for title name, album name, song name, cast, crew, etc.
  • "Instant" rewind and fast forward, including search to title, chapter, track, and timecode.
  • Durability (no wear from playing, only from physical damage).
  • Compact size

Note: Most discs do not contain all features.   Some discs may not allow searching or skipping.

WHAT ARE EXTRAS or SPECIAL FEATURES?

One of the unique selling points of DVD is the ability to add more to the disc than just the programme.
These additions are commonly known as extras or special features, and vary from disc to disc but good quality discs should contain at least one of the following features:

  • Different audio soundtracks, either for selecting to listen without commentary or for different languages
  • 'Behind the scenes' featurettes and 'Making of' documentaries
  • Cast and crew biographies and filmographies
  • Audio commentaries from cast and crew
  • Extra or Deleted scenes
  • Alternate endings
  • Interactive Menus
  • Trailers
  • Multiple viewing angles
  • Web Links

Every DVD released by Nova contains an Information box (as with our VHS videos) with helpful info and icons about the DVD disc, and a separate Special Features box so you can tell exactly which features the disc has.
