General Information

This page provides more technical information about our DVDs.

All Nova Home Videos carry this information box on the rear of the cover.  It is designed so all the information you need to know is in one place and easy to find.

Here is an more detailed explanation of the various terms and logos…

Classification
All videos sold in the UK have to be classified, and the body responsible for this the British Board of Film Classification.  All TV series and Feature Films have to be sent to the BBFC for classification, although general documentary-type videos are "exempt from classification".  This means they are suitable for general viewing.

Sound Mode
All Nova produced programmes are made in stereo, although if the programme contains archive film, only the new segments may be stereo.

The sound on DVDs can either be Linear PCM or Dolby Digital.  Dolby Digital can provide up to 6 channels of discrete audio channels: left, right and centre front, right and left surround and a low frequency channel.  Despite this, programmes may produced in stereo, and then encoded into Dolby Digital for the DVD.  This means that the Dolby Digital signal contains normal stereo sound.

To help distinguish which type of sound is present on the disc, Nova includes a series of icons to provide information, along with the wording as described above.

This icon means the programme sound is stereo (or dual channel mono)

This icon means the programme sound is stereo with a Centre Commentary channel.

This icon means the programme sound is full 5 channel Surround.

Nova is equipped for producing DVDs in full
Dolby Digital surround, and in the near future, we will be releasing several titles with surround soundtracks.  For best results, a Dolby Digital decoder is required, but Dolby Surround / Pro Logic decoders will also provide breathtaking surround sound just like the cinema.

All Nova Home Videos on
VHS are recorded in Hi-Fi sound.  For people with Hi-Fi Stereo video players connected to a stereo system or stereo TV, this provides near CD-quality stereo sound.

Video Aspect Ratio
The video aspect ratio is the way you can see whether the video has been made in widescreen.
Normal regular television sets have an aspect ratio of 4:3, that is for every 4 units across, they are 3 units high.  Widescreen television sets have an aspect ratio of 16:9.
Nova has already produced a selection of DVDs in widescreen.
