Questions And Answers

Got a question about Nova Home Video and Nova Audio?  Here's the answers...

Q. Is it true Nova Home Video will be ditching VHS?!
A. Yes, it is - in fact we already have.  Sales of VHS versions of our releases have been dropping steadily since we introduced our full-featured DVDs in November 2001.  After that, VHS sales dropped so low it became commercial unviable to produce them.  Therefore, in 2005, we stopped producing VHS products completely.

Q. When will all Nova Home Videos be in Widescreen?

  1. Since June 2005, all filming we undertake specifically for titles containing 100% new footage will be shot in the 16:9 widescreen format.  These will be titles which have no archive or library footage in them - such as South Yorkshire Rail 2008 and Bus Focus - Doncaster - which will be the world's first widescreen bus DVD.  Obviously, our titles which have archive or library footage in them will continue to be in the conventional 'square' 4:3 format, as they won't benefit from widescreen footage.  Click for more information about Widescreen

Q. I've got Broadband.  Will Nova Home Videos be available over the net?

  1. Until recently, if you've had Broadband internet access, you could only watch short high quality clips from the Nova archives and the samplers from the Nova Home Video range from this site.  But now, you can download complete Nova Home Video programmes in full DVD-quality via the world's first online television channel dedicated to transport - Nova Wheels.

With Nova Wheels, you have access to hundreds of free clips and segments from the vast Nova library, available whenever you want.

Q. Will you be producing programmes in High Definition?
A. Yes - we're due to be starting filming programmes in High Definition (HD) at the end of 2007.  However, because the High Definition DVD formats (HD-DVD and Blu-Ray) have only just been released in the UK, it is unlikely that we will be editing these HD filmed material in HD.  It is more likely we will film in HD and edit in Standard Definition - which even so, will produce better quality pictures than just filming in Standard Definition to start with.  These programmes can then be re-edited by the edit suite into HD when consumer delivery formats are more readily available.

Q. Will Nova Home Video and Nova Audio be releasing titles in any of the new computer formats?

A. Yes.  Nova Home Entertainment will be releasing a small selection of video titles in the new DivX format, which uses the new MPEG-4 compression standard and allows 60-80 minutes of video on a single CD-ROM.  DivX movies will play on medium specification computers (P2 500+) and require the DivX codec to be installed on the computer to enable playback (which will be supplied on the disc).  Any Nova releases in the DivX format will contain digital stereo sound recorded in the MP3 format.  Several new DVD players & recorders also support the DivX format.

Nova Audio is looking into the possibility of releasing a selection of titles on CD in the MP3 audio format.  This allows hours of stereo CD-quality audio on one CD disc.  Such CDs would only playback on computers and selected portable CD players and DVD players with MP3 features.  Nova Audio is also looking into the streaming of audio CDs across the internet.

Q. Do Nova Home Video release titles on other formats as well as DVD?
We did release a few Nova Home Video titles on both
Video CD (or VCD) and SuperVideo CD (or SVCD).  These titles are now deleted, although they are still available.  These two CD-based formats are now considered to be old technology and have been superseded by newer formats.
